http://37signals.com/svn/archi...icago_business_cover_story.php Date: 4/30/2006 5:38 PM This week’s cover story at Crain’s Chicago Business talks about the new faces of technology in Chicago. The piece compares the return of the once again VC-funded “bubble boys” who lost billions for their investors in the early part of this decade with the new breed of VC-free companies going it alone.
For 1/2 of the cover shot Crain’s chose Robert Bernard, former CEO of the 10,000 pink-slip MarchFirst, as the poster child for the old guard that’s back again with “the sequel” (this time betting on $40 million in VC). On the other half you’ll find my mug representing people building companies with a different set of investors: paying customers.
Other Chicago companies mentioned in the piece are FeedBurner, TicketsNow.com (a company that generated $142 million in annual sales without outside investors), and SportVision, the company that devised the yellow first-down line you see when you watch football games.
Special thanks to Julie Johnsson and Shruti Daté Singh for putting the well-written piece together.
